Ultraman Z (ウルトラマンゼット, Urutoraman Zetto), alternatively spelt Ultraman Zett, is the main protagonist of Ultraman Z. He is a trainee in the Inter Galactic Defense Force and the self-proclaimed disciple of Ultraman Zero.

Personality

Z is a tough and athletic protégé of Ultraman Zero who always operates at full power. He also has a humorous side, as he is unused to Earth’s culture and sometimes uses words incorrectly. While Z is inexperienced and still developing (Zero remarked him being only "half or maybe one-third" of a fully-fledged hero despite his potential), he’s also a passionate hero who loves peace and justice more than anyone. He also add the word "Ultra" in every word that he said like "Ultra-Shock" and "Ultra-Spirit".

Z's default form before he accesses his different forms using Ultra Medal through Ultra Z Riser.

When Z assumes control of Haruki's body, he is able to transform into a human-sized version of his default form, though this puts a lot of strain on Z, hence making him only being able to maintain this form for 50 seconds.

This form has the following abilities:

  • Zestium Beam (ゼスティウム光線, Zesutiumu Kōsen): Z generates a Z-shaped energy beam from his body and forms a cross with his arms as he fires the energy beam to destroy monsters.

Alpha Edge (アルファエッジ, Arufa Ejji) is Z's speed and martial arts-based form by accessing the power of the Zero, Seven, and Leo Ultra Medals through Ultra Z Riser. Alpha Edge fights using the Space Martial Arts (宇宙拳法, Uchū Kenpō) fighting style inherited from Zero and Leo.

This form has the following abilities:

  • Zestium Maser (ゼスティウムメーザー, Zesutiumu Mēzā): Z fires a high-temperature beam from his Beam Lamp similar to Seven's Emerium Ray, Leo's Leo Cross Beam and Zero's Emerium Slash.
  • Zestium Beam (ゼスティウム光線, Zesutiumu Kōsen): Z generates a Z-shaped energy beam from the solar panels on his body and forms a cross with his arms as he shoots the energy beam to destroy monsters.
  • Ultra Z Riser Abilities:

Beta Smash (ベータスマッシュ, Bēta Sumasshu) is Z's strength-based form by accessing the power of the Ultraman, Ace, and Taro Ultra Medals through Ultra Z Riser.

Beta Smash's Fighting Style is based on a Pro Wrestler.

This form has the following abilities:

  • Zestium Upper (ゼスティウムアッパー, Zesutiumu Appā): Z performs an uppercut that is charged with energy. It is based on Ultraman and Ace's Ultra Punch and Taro's Atomic Punch.
  • Zestium Beam (ゼスティウム光線, Zesutiumu Kōsen): Z generates a Z-shaped energy beam from his body and forms a cross with his arms as he fires the energy beam to destroy monsters

Gamma Future (ガンマフューチャー, Ganma Fyūchā)[2] is Z's Psychic form by accessing the power of the Tiga, Dyna, and Gaia Ultra Medals through Ultra Z Riser.

This form has the following abilities:

  • Zestium Drive (ゼスティウムドライブ, Zesutiumu Doraibu): Z generates red and purple whips from both of his hands as he strikes it toward the enemy.
  • Gamma Illusion (ガンマイリュージョン, Ganma Iryūjon): Z creates illusions of Ultraman Tiga, Dyna, and Gaia to fight alongside with him in the battle while performing their finisher: Zeppellion Ray, Solgent Ray, and Photon Stream respectively.
  • Gamma Freezer (ガンマフリーザー, Ganma Furīzā): A technique based on Tiga Freezer and Gaia Blizzard, Z fires a freezing beam to halt the movements of his enemy.
  • Gamma Through (ガンマスルー, Ganma Surū): Z can shrink himself to enter his enemy's body.
  • Gamma Miracle Hold (ガンマミラクルホールド, Ganma Mirakuru Hōrudo):

Portrayal

  • Ultraman Z is voiced by Tasuku Hatanaka (畠中祐, Hatanaka Tasuku). His suit actor is Hideyoshi Iwata (岩田 栄慶, Iwata Hideyoshi).

Etymology

The names of Ultraman Z’s Ultra Fusion forms are based on letters of the Greek alphabet:

  • Alpha Edge from "α".
  • Beta Smash from "β".
  • Gamma Future from "γ".
  • Delta Rise Claw from "Δ".
  • Sigma Breaster from "Σ".

Notes

  • Ultraman Z is the third Ultraman to have an asymmetrical Color Timer design, with the others being Ultraman Nice and Ultraman Saga.
  • His facial design overall bears a resemblance to Ultraman Fuma.
  • Ultraman Z is the third Ultra after Ultraman Geed and Ultraman Orb to have the first Fusion Form as Main Form.
    • Interestingly, Z's situation seems to be the reverse of Orb's. Whilst Orb's Origin form was not revealed until much later and eventually replaced Specium Zeperion as his default form, Z would use Alpha Edge as his main form in combat after his fusion with Haruki despite already having his own personal form from the start.
      • Unlike both Z and Orb, Geed lack his original form from the start.
  • Z is currently 5,000 years old.
  • His fusion forms have similarities with other Ultras:
    • Ultraman Z Alpha Edge design overall bears a resemblance to Ultraman Orb Emerium Slugger. Both of them have the same fighting style and pose that were based on karate, and also incorporate Ultraseven and Ultraman Zero as part of their fusions.
    • Ultraman Z Beta Smash's bulky design is very similar to Ultraman Titas, another strength-based Ultra.
  • In episode 8 of Ultraman Z & Zero Voice Drama, it is hinted that Ultraman Z may not be a native resident of the Land of Light.
